Waterhouse Confirms 2 for 2014 Grafton Cup

Currently amidst a typically strong racing calendar which has already delivered several victories at the highest level of Australian racing, trainer Gai Waterhouse is chasing further success in Thursday’s featured Grafton Cup (2350m) with talented stable mates Travolta and Queenstown.

Finishing mid-pack in his only start this preparation; the Listed Mercedes Benz Centenary Mile (1600m) at Eagle Farm on June 21st, Travolta will have to overcome the awkward barrier 13 in Thursday’s feature race, however is reportedly in excellent condition since returning to Sydney last week.

“Both horses are back in the Sydney stable and pulled up well after their last start,” Waterhouse’s racing manager Adrian Bott told the Daily Examiner.

“Travolta turned in a pleasing first-up run over a distance short of his best and well appreciate the step up in distance of the Grafton Cup.”

Arguably offering Waterhouse her best chance of success in the 2014 Grafton Cup, Queenstown finished third amongst classy company in the Octagonal Handicap (1400m) first-up before running on for a fighting fifth in the Centenary Mile last time out.

“Queenstown was in the same race and didn’t have the best of luck. She will also appreciate the step up in distance,” Bott added.

Securing an impressive total of six race wins and 12 minor places from just 29 competitive starts, Travolta began his racing career under the care of New Zealand-based trainer John Kiernan; where he was a mainstay in major events, including an impressive run for sixth in the Group 1 New Zealand Derby (2400m) in 2012.
