Mullet Man Capable of Competitive 2015 Grafton Cup

July 7th, 2015

Mullet Man is rated virtually no chance of success at current $101 odds to win Thursday’s 2015 Grafton Cup (2350m), however trainer Ruth Cooper is thrilled with the condition of the classy five-year-old and believes he is ready to lay a great account for himself.

Mullet Man was sent off as a $41 chance in the 2014 edition of the Grafton Cup having won the Prelude event over 2210m by half a length a week earlier, but was unable to handle the late tempo set by his big-name city counterparts in the feature race and finishing tenth.

Having again won the Grafton Cup Prelude, this time by close to two lengths, Cooper remains optimistic the Dane Fever gelding is a live chance of a huge upset in the 2015 Grafton Cup, but is thrilled to saddle the five-year-old regardless of the result on Thursday afternoon.

“Fantastic. I’m really happy. Andrew rode him beautifully,” Cooper told the Northern Star after jockey Andrew Adkins steered Mullet Man to success in the Prelude.

“We had to do some work with him to get him 100 per cent right for today. It was all part of the plan.

“He had a neck problem which had to be manipulated and his coat was off a bit but it’s all good now.

“I’d just love to see him draw a barrier in the cup when he can get a fair dinkum chance.

“He got crook in last year’s race when he only beat a few home. I didn’t realise how crook until after the race.

“It’s been a good race for me. Let’s hope Mullet Man can go better in the Grafton Cup than last year.”

Mullet Man has posted nine wins and as many minors through his busy 55 start career so far; earning more than $125,000 in prize money for the Moonbi-based trainer; largely in country events.
