Kapour Primed for 2015 Grafton Cup

July 8th, 2015

Talented import Kapour has returned to racing in exceptional form this time, and trainer Ciaron Maher is confident the gelding is poised for another standout black type victory in Thursday’s 2015 Grafton Cup (2350m).

Posting four wins and a further two minors through only twelve career starts so far, the lightly-raced five-year-old has quickly built to the task through three races this time; finishing eighth in the Carlton Draught Handicap (1600m) first-up before running sixth in the Dominant Handicap (2040m) and finally posting a near-five length win in the Listed Winter Cup (2400m) last time out on June 27th.

Confident the general conditions of the 2015 Grafton Cup will suit his runner, Maher told Racing Ahead he believes a firmer track likely to materialise this week will be key in another winning performance.

“He looked the other day like he would have run out a solid 2600m on a heavy track,” Maher said.

“He’s back to only 2350m which is similar to what he ran over the other day but it’s probably going to be a better surface on top of the ground.

“We’ve just had to keep him ticking over and he’s done really well, he’s nice and bright.

“He’ll travel up tonight from Sydney and line up tomorrow. He’s in good order.”

Maher has confirmed Kerrin McEvoy will take the ride on Kapour in the 2015 Grafton Cup and is confident the last-start hoop knows the horse inside and out.

“He’ll be on speed somewhere. It’s great having Macca (McEvoy) on last start, he can just place him as per the speed of the race,” he added.

“From barrier 6 he’s going to be there somewhere but if something really wants to zip across and really take it up with the thought of a lead at all costs scenario I suppose he’ll just let them go and sit on their tail.”

Allocated the ideal barrier 6, Kapour has been charged with carrying 56kgs and is currently available at 2015 Grafton Cup odds of $3.50 for success with leading online bookie Ladbrokes.com.au.
