The Waterhouse trained Queenstown was able to collect the major prize in last year’s Listed $150,000 Grafton Cup (2350m) and a win by Rocking On in 2006 makes it three Grafton Cup wins for the First Lady Of The Turf.

Winning rider Blake Shinn collected his second Grafton Cup after winning  the race two year’s ago on the Ciaron Maher trained Mr O’Ceirin and the top Sydney jockey made light work of an outside barrier and had the race under control after crossing to the fence to lead the field out of the straight the first time.

Shinn rated Bonfire ($5 equal favourite) perfectly in front and was never headed as he fought deep to hold off all the challengers in the straight to record a neck win over the Maher trained Kapour ($5 equal favourite) with Shoreham ($7) from the Gerald Ryan stable a nose away in third spot.

Even though Shinn seemed to have Bonfire travelling well within himself under the steadier of 59kg in the middle stages, the English import was able to set a new track record of 2:22.59s on a very firm surface that saw several other records fall during the day’s racing.

“It was a great win. He had 59kg, did it from both ends,” Shinn said.

“Kapour challenged strongly but that determination really held, that bone and muscle that Gai instils in these horses.”

“He bowled along at a good tempo, but the thing was that he had his ears pricked and he was happy within himself.”

“Gai’s horses, as we have become accustomed to know, they can sustained their sectionals. If I was to restrain him any slower he would have been sought of fighting me a little bit. He was happy bowling along and as we could see when I asked him for an effort, he kicked in again.”

“He did a great job and I feel the best horse won, he carried the weight and did a great job.”

“It’s great to win a Grafton Cup.”
