Rednav is the 2016 Grafton Cup Winner

July 14th, 2016

Rednav has produced a major boilover this afternoon; mustering an impressive turn of foot in the final straight to take out the 2016 Grafton Cup (2350m) from All Clear and Jumbo Prince.

Rednav was rated almost no chance of success in the 2016 Grafton Cup; jumping as an $81 chance but did his chances of success no harm when finding a good position in transit off the pace of early leaders Brave Ali and Foreign Prince.

Experiencing a carefree run in transit and settling into a good rhythm, jockey Peter Graham maintained an inside line rounding onto the final straight; a move that proved pivotal when the gelding mustered a huge turn of foot late and poked clear to register a career-best win to date in the 2016 Grafton Cup.

Young trainer Sally Taylor was elated with the five-year-old’s performance and was thrilled to repay the faith placed in her by the horse’s connections.

“I am in complete shock!” Taylor said after the race.

“It’s absolutely amazing – the best feeling I have ever experienced. I cannot believe I am standing here right now.

“I thought he’d improve from his run last time, but I never expected this.

“Peter’s perfect for him. He needs a jockey that actually rides him and wake him up early. He got going on him from the 1000m there, which is what he needs.

“He comes from behind or just off them, and we didn’t have instructions so he’s ridden him absolutely perfectly.”

Graham delivered a perfectly-timed ride on Rednav to win the 2016 Grafton Cup but was quick to lay all the praise of the quality of the horse in the victory.

“It’s terrific, what a buzz!” Graham said after dismounting.

“I’ve ridden winners everywhere but nothing of this level.

“I gave myself a rough hope last time but I thought today that realistically, he’s just another country horse plugging away against those good horses.

“I had a terrific run, he couldn’t have done it any better.

“I was happy with him the whole way, but at the 600m I kept getting runs up the inside and by the time I got to the corner I wasn’t far off them.

“I thought wow, I am a chance and he just kept coming.”

In taking out the 2016 Grafton Cup, Rednav has posted a commendable six wins and as many minors through twenty-six starts.
